SOLVE is a five-step process that Katie developed through her coaching work to help leaders get unstuck from complex challenges. Each stage builds towards solving a leader's challenge.

State the problem
At this stage, you’ll be getting clear on what the problem entails by crafting a one or two-sentence summary of the problem. It’s about defining it clearly.
O
Open the box
You’ll begin by exploring the problem in greater depth, concentrating on its root causes. Katie will support you in identifying what’s driving this challenge so you can apply research to understand it clearly.

Lay out your solution
Here, you’ll design a response that fits the problem. You’ll make use of the research you’ve conducted to help you explore options and build a plan that works for your particular situation.

Venture forth!
This stage encourages you to explore the problems you may face as you start to take action and how to handle these. You’ll anticipate what the obstacles could be and work out what you might need to do to get around them.

Elevate your learning
At this final stage, you’ll be encouraged to reflect on what you’ve learnt and think about how to apply it to other contexts and settings so that your new skills and knowledge do not go to waste.

Founder and director of Katie Best Associates, a leadership development consultancy working with executives, senior leaders, and business owners at organisations including KPMG, EY, Goldman Sachs, Barclays, Verizon, Oxfam, and the NHS. I'm a visiting fellow at the London School of Economics, heading the MBA Essentials executive education programme, and a visiting research fellow at King’s College London.
